I think that this is saying that a parent can lead you so far in life, it is your responsibility when you get older or on your own its your responsibility to make things happen. Such as throughout school a parent can help you as in get you the supplies or make sure you have a way to get the things you need, but it is your job to make the grades and determine you own future or destiny. 

Mental State of Mind

"Reading is to mind as exercise is to body" 

This is stating that as you put something to your mind or in your heart it comes for a change. Just as  when your are exercising the thing you are wanting to accomplish is to lose weight or burn calories. So when you are reading something that is more than likely good, it is giving you more knowledge of that particular thing or subject.
